Ramp Installations

The final assembly of preassembled ramp components on location is the moment when the clients’ dreams come true and can be an emotional moment. Work with a spirited team of volunteers to make a life-changing difference in someone’s world. No experience is required. Experienced volunteers will instruct you. Men and women can participate. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. 

SUPERVISED BY:  Designated Project Manager 

 

DUTIES:

  • Arrive on location by designated time (typically 9 AM) for a briefing, safety review, ramp design overview and plan for the day.

  • Work collaboratively with other volunteers under the supervision of an experienced Project Manager.

  • Set up tool and work area.

  • Unload and stage materials as directed.

  • Assemble and install preassembled ramp components.

  • Maintain a safe work area by removing scrap material from walking paths.

  • Perform site clean-up, site maintenance, and tool load up at the end of the project build.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have transportation.

  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds.

  • Men and women of all ages can participate.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying but tolerable weather conditions.

  • No construction experience is required. Experienced volunteers and Project Managers will guide you through every step of the process.

  • Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Must be a registered volunteer. Register at www.SAWsVA.org.

 

TIME COMMITMENT:

  • Saturdays 9 AM to 3 PM depending on the length of the ramp. (Lunch will be provided if project goes beyond noon.)

  • Once a month or as often as you are able.

 

LOCATION:

  • Varies by location of client’s residence.

 

TRAINING

  • All tools and materials are provided.

  • Dress appropriately for the weather

  • Wear comfortable clothing

  • Closed-toe shoes are required

  • Recommended safety equipment

  • Work gloves and safety glasses

  • Ear plugs (impact drivers and saws are loud)

  • Experienced volunteers will work with and instruct you.
