Volunteer Opportunities

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in volunteering with SAWS Virginia. We are dedicated to changing the lives of individuals confined to their homes while also offering a profound and enriching experience for the volunteers who serve them. Volunteers power our mission and are the heart of our organization. 

Whether you like to build things or not, there are many ways to participate in this life changing work. And ways to see and feel its impact directly. Check out the list below to see where your passions or experience can become an asset to the disabled in our community. 

Volunteer and you will be enriched.

  • Provide customer service as first point of contact for applicants.

  • Review applications for completeness upon receipt and follow up for missing information or clarity.

  • Assist with correspondence and mailings.

Site Surveyors

  • Work with experienced surveyor to collect accurate measurements and characteristics of the site to determine the best design for the ramp to be built.

Workshop Manager

  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe shop environment.

  • Maintain tool and equipment inventory.

  • Assure tool batteries are fully charged.

Pre-Builds

  • Work with experienced volunteers to cut material required as listed on the Cut List.

  • Preassemble ramp components as specified by the design.

  • Load finished material onto trailers.

Ramp Installations

Communications

Administrative Assistant(s)

This is a role for those who love to create stories of human struggle and resolution.

  • Stories of independence regained, and life changes are part of every ramp we build.

  • Support the organization's mission by assisting with media outreach, public relations.

  • Crerate content for our digital platforms and local media.

  • Help raise awareness of our work, engage the community, and enhance the organization's public image through storytelling and strategic communications. (virtual role)

Social Media

  • Work with experienced content creator to create content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, website) 

  • Help tell the stories of the clients we serve.

  • Help increase brand awareness, engage the community, and drive traffic to the organization’s online resources.

Photography/Videography

  • Capture the volunteers in action in pictures or video at the workshop and onsite.

  • Capture images of clients’ reactions upon completion of their ramp.

  • Video short interviews of clients and volunteers.

Hospitality

  • Prepare and deliver lunches for build teams so they don’t need to leave the work site.

  • Lunches may contain a sandwich, snack, fruit, dessert, and water or Gatorade.

  • Expenses are reimbursed.

Grant Writers

  • Work with experienced grant writers to craft and edit persuasive grant proposals, Letters of Inquiry.

  • Use storytelling and provided data to clearly articulate the organization’s needs and impact.

SAWs Virginia is an 501(c)3 nonprofit that works to restore the freedom, independence and dignity of impoverished ambulatory disabled persons allowing them to more easily access medical services, improve the safety of their home, reconnect with their community and age-in-place regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or creed.
